R6S Seasonal Rank distribution and percentage of players - March 2019

R6S Seasonal Rank distribution and percentage of players - March 2019

Rainbow Six Siege seasonal and monthly rank distribution. Find out the percentage of players by rank in each season and learn the true value of your skill.

What influences the rank

Ubisoft shared detailed information on what affects our rank:

The skill rank is regional based. The real value of a rank can vary from region to region. If we move to another place in the world, we will have to play the placement games again.

Only victories matter. R6S is a team game, so only winning or losing a match can change your rank. You score, individual performance, and KDA do not influence the rank or the points gained.

Abandoning the game counts as a loss. The system considers any leave for AFK, vote-kick, or rage-quit a defeat. Instead, if the teams are booted out of the game due to server issues, the match doesn’t count and there is no skill adjustment.

Uncertainty. The game estimates your skill, so based on the uncertainty level you might get more or less points by winning or losing a match. Even if you win a game with a friend at your same rank, you may gain a different amount of points.

Hard reset. At the end of each season there is a hard reset. Your new rank will depend completely on the new 10 placement matches, and won’t be influenced by the past one.

The rank distribution

Ubisoft doesn’t share official and updated data on the rank distribution, but fortunately there are many third party websites that collect info from their users. Of course, the statistics displayed in this article don't include the whole R6 population because each website can only access the data of the users using their service.

Data until August 2018

I analyzed all the websites available, and finally I concluded that R6DB is the most reliable one due to the huge number of visitors.

Notes:

  • All regions included.

  • Only data from the PC game. The distribution on console is very similar.

  • The percentages in the monthly ranks are different because they also consider the unranked players. Instead, the values in the seasonal ones exclude them.

Data from September 2018

R6DB closed on August 20th, but a few weeks later a reliable substitute took its place: R6Tab. We will use it from now on.

Notes:

  • All regions included.

  • Only data from the PC game. The distribution on console is very similar.

  • It doesn’t show the exact number of players per rank, but only their percentage.

I will update the data monthly, so we will have an idea on how the rank distribution evolves over time, and if there is any change.

Summarizing the data

These stats are based on 1,751,809 PC players. The percentages are slightly different if compared to the previous months also because they do not take into account the unranked players anymore.

  • Copper: 2.01%

  • Bronze: 6.28%

  • Silver: 17.74%

  • Gold: 55.95%

  • Platinum: 16.91%

  • Diamond: 1.11%

The average ranked player is a high Gold 3. Honestly, the current distribution feels very strange as the skill difference among Gold players is shocking.

Only a minor amount of players drops below Silver. The vast majority is situated between Silver and Platinum. Copper 4 is a sort of container for the least skilled players in the game.

There is a massive difference between Gold and high Platinum. Considering how the matchmaking works, to go beyond Platinum 3 you must really prove your worth.

Diamonds are the elite. Ubisoft already confirmed that there isn’t a set number of Diamond players. To reach this rank you must master the game.

I think that the current distribution is acceptable, but the percentage of population ranked at Gold is excessive, and the entire low ranked area might require an overhaul.

Do not forget that the Rainbow Six Siege ranked system is still in beta and that the developers are actively working on it. As you can see from the successive graphs, there are huge differences between the first and the second year.

What influences the rank

According to the official Ubisoft FAQs, the Rainbow Six Siege rank is affected only by two factors:

  • The relative skill levels of the players/teams in the game.

  • Whether or not your team won the game.

Your KDA, score, use of gadgets, and gameplay skills have no weight. R6 Siege is a team game, so the only factor that really matters is your ability to win the game. For example, you might be a terrible fragger, but your map knowledge and communicative skills could influence the outcome of the match.

No soft resets

In most competitive multiplayer games, there is a soft reset at the end of each season, so your previous rank is taken into consideration during the new placement games. Rainbow Six Siege is an exception to the rule because it applies a hard reset.

I have tested the system again recently. During the first season of year 4, I have played all ten placement games with a friend of mine.

We had a different rank at the end of the past season - and I have obtained a better kill ratio in almost all the placement matches ;) - but we still got the same identical numerical rank.

From year 3 to 4

There are basically no differences between the rank distribution in year 3 and the one in the first season of year 4.

Expect many changes in season 2 because Ubisoft announced they will completely rework the ranking distribution and introduce a Pick and Ban system in competitive mode.

Year 3

From November 2018 to February 2019

No info. I believe that the statistical tool updates the data periodically, so we can’t expect fresh data monthly anymore.

Note

R6DB has been shut down on August 20th, so starting from this month we are using R6Tab as our source of data. This change might explain partly the variations in the rank distribution, but do not overlook that the new season started recently, and this factor is surely influencing the stats.
